Email Open Rate Calculator.

Enter what you sent, what bounced and your unique opens to get the open rate of delivered and of sent emails, with the working shown.

How it works

How The Open Rate Is Worked Out

Every figure is exact arithmetic on the counts you enter, and the division is shown under each rate.

  1. 01

    Enter Your Counts

Emails sent, emails that bounced and unique opens, the number of emails opened at least once.

  2. 02

    Bounces Come Off

Sent minus bounced gives delivered emails, because an email that bounced could never be opened.

  3. 03

    Read Both Rates

The open rate of delivered emails comes first, and the open rate of sent emails sits beside it.

The formula

Open Rate Formula

Open rate = unique opens ÷ delivered emails × 100, where delivered emails = emails sent − bounced emails. Example: 1,000 sent, 40 bounced and 288 unique opens give 288 ÷ 960 = 30.00%.

An open is recorded when a tracking image in the email loads. Mail apps that block images record nothing, and Apple Mail Privacy Protection loads images whether or not anyone reads the email, so an open rate is an estimate in both directions.

AI-powered

What The AI Does

When you ask, SpirenAI, SendCanyon's AI, explains what your open rate means and suggests next steps. It sees only the rates and notes the calculator produced. Sentences with a number the calculator did not produce, or with averages and benchmarks, are dropped.

  • Runs only when you ask for it
  • Sees only the calculated rates
  • Drops numbers it was not given
  • Never quotes averages or benchmarks

Email Open Rate Questions

How the rate is calculated, which base to use, and why privacy features change what an open means.

Divide unique opens by delivered emails and multiply by 100. Delivered emails are emails sent minus hard and soft bounces, so addresses that could never open the email do not pull the rate down. For example, 1,000 sent, 40 bounced and 288 unique opens give 288 ÷ 960 = 30.00%. Some tools divide by emails sent instead, so this calculator shows that figure too.

SendCanyon reports every rate per campaign, mailbox and domain, divided by emails sent, and shows a dash instead of 0% when something could not be measured.
