How it works

How Click-To-Open Rate Is Worked Out

Clicks are divided by the people who opened, so the rate shows how well the email itself persuaded.

  1. 01

    Enter Opens And Clicks

Unique opens and unique clicks, each counted once per email however many times it happened.

  2. 02

    Add Sent And Bounced

Optional. With them, the calculator also gives click-through rate of delivered and of sent emails.

  3. 03

    Compare CTOR And CTR

Click-to-open rate judges the content. Click-through rate judges the whole send, reach included.

  4. 04

    Check The Inputs

Clicks above opens are explained rather than turned into a rate over 100%.

The formula

Click-To-Open Rate Formula

Click-to-open rate = unique clicks ÷ unique opens × 100. Example: 300 unique opens and 36 unique clicks give 36 ÷ 300 = 12.00%.

Click-through rate = unique clicks ÷ delivered emails × 100. The same 36 clicks from 2,400 delivered emails is a click-through rate of 1.50%, which is why the two rates should never be compared with each other.

AI-powered

What The AI Does

When you ask, SpirenAI, SendCanyon's AI, explains what your click-to-open rate says about the email and what to try next. It sees only the calculated rates and notes, and any sentence with a number the calculator did not produce is dropped.

  • Runs only when you ask for it
  • Explains CTOR beside CTR
  • Drops numbers it was not given
  • Never quotes averages or benchmarks

Click-To-Open Rate Questions

The formula, how it differs from click-through rate, and what can distort it.

Divide unique clicks by unique opens and multiply by 100. For example, 300 unique opens and 36 unique clicks give 36 ÷ 300 = 12.00%. Because only people who opened are in the base, the rate shows how persuasive the email was to the people who saw it, separate from how many people opened it.

Track Clicks Without Counting Scanners.

SendCanyon counts the first click on each email, drops scanners that identify themselves, and reports clicks per campaign beside replies.
